Korey DeGraffenreid of Bolivar painted his tractor purple and decorated it in Relay for Life style with encouraging messages for those battling cancer. He uses this tractor in pulls and hopes to bring it to the Polk County Relay for Life and use it in a Springfield competition this year. He said he decorated the tractor because he knows family and friends who have battled cancer.

The topic of Tweets in recent weeks has been mainly centred on Pudsey, the Britain’s Got Talent pooch worth half-a-million pound. This light and friendly approach to interacting with potential customers has appealed to animal lovers up and down the country.

At the moment, the team behind PetFleas’ social media campaign are currently working on a Facebook feature that allows followers to nominate their pets for the ‘Pet of the Month’ award. The winner will have their pet’s photograph featured in the Facebook page cover for the whole of that month. Managing Director Mark Proctor is extremely happy with the start they have made to their social media conquest.

“We want the social media side of our business to be fun and informative, so expect to see quite a bit of variety with loads of photos and tips for your pets’ health with news from around the industry.”

The Cheshire based online company has also launched a brand new blog page on their website, focussing on pet health and advice. The blogs loaded so far mainly focus on flea and worming treatment in pets, although other information and products are available. A new addition to the blog is added every week, with particular attention being paid to their most popular products, including Frontline for Dogs. The blogs include tips and advice on how to treat and avoid fleas with pets at home.

So from being one of the first online providers of animal health products and services, PetFleas is now looking forward to exploiting the social media universe. Everyone involved with the company is confident the reaction will be very positive.

How to reduce impulse-buying temptation:

If you have the urge to spend, jot down what you want to buy on a piece of paper and put the note aside for the day. After a few hours, it may not seem so important.

Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick have had their share of fights, many of which their fans have watched unfold on TV.

And now, Life Style is reporting that the couple had a major blowup that resulted in Kourtney kicking Scott out of the house—and that their mega-scene was captured on camera for the upcoming season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians (which premieres Sunday at 9 p.m., FYI).

Meanwhile, a source confirms that the reported dramatic scene in which Kourtney tells Scott to move out until she’s ready to give birth never took place, and that “no scene has been shot like that at all.”

The reason Scott didn’t attend the baby shower Saturday along with fellow Kardashian-attached guys like Lamar Odom and Kanye West is that he was in Atlantic City making a promotional appearance, then checking on his restaurant in New York.

Kourtney agreed it was more important for him to keep his work appointments than go to the party, the source says, adding, “They are fine and happy.”

Last year, when Suzanne Jackson’s dog, Artie, wasn’t feeling well, she took him to the veterinarian.

Tests didn’t find anything wrong with the 14-year-old Lhaso Apso, but the animal doctor suggested a bland diet.

Quick-and-easy dog food

Suzanne Jackson, doesn’t follow an exact recipe for her basic homemade dog food mix; but here are her general instructions:

I don’t use exact measurements, but the mix is about 30 percent oatmeal, 30 percent rice, 20 percent vegetables, and 20 percent chicken.

I cook boneless, skinless chicken breasts in water over medium-low heat. If you boil it, the chicken breasts shrink and get really tough.

Once the chicken is cooked, cut it into bite-sized (for your dog) pieces and place in a bowl to cool.

Buy frozen vegetables. I use a mix that includes carrots, broccoli and cauliflower. Make sure it doesn’t have onions, which are toxic to dogs.

Partially defrost the vegetables, cut them into bite sized pieces and add to the bowl with the chicken. (Partially frozen vegetables will help the chicken cool faster.)

Cook the brown rice in the same pot as the chicken. Cook for about 25 minutes until it’s soft. Then add oatmeal and simmer until it’s cooked through. Stir in chicken and vegetables.

Divide into portions and store in plastic containers with a tight-fitting lid. Keep a few in the refrigerator and freeze the rest.

Beef and Potatoes

When you mix this together, the potatoes will sop up all the juices from the beef and take on a meaty taste.

8 cups water

9 medium russet potatoes (about 3 pounds),

1 (10-ounce) package frozen green beans, thawed and coarsely chopped

21/2 pounds ground beef (85 percent lean)

1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, finely chopped

1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

In a large stockpot, bring the water to boil over high heat.

Meanwhile remove eyes and green spots from potatoes; cut into ½-inch cubes.

Add the potatoes to the boiling water and decrease heat to medium. Simmer 20 to 25 minutes with the lid slightly askew, until the potatoes are easily pierced with a fork. Drain.

In a food processor, pulse the green beans until finely chopped. Add the beef, green beans, rosemary and garlic powder to the pot that was used to cook the potatoes and cook over medium-high heat for 12 to 15 minutes, until the beef is browned. Stir frequently to break meat into smaller bits.

Remove the beef mixture from the heat, stir in the potatoes, and allow to cool prior to mixing in any supplements.

Divide into two meals, or serve one-half the daily portion per day with one-half the normal amount of food.

Serving » 12 cups; 300 calories per cup.

Daily portion:10-pound dog: 2⁄3 to 1¼ cups; 20-pound dog: 1½ to 2 cups; 40-pound dog:2 2⁄3 cups to 3 1⁄3 cups; 60-pound dog: 31/2 to 41/2 cups; 80-pound dog: 41/2 to 5 2⁄3 cups.

Jackson started feeding Artie — as well as her other dog, Ripley, a Chihuahua/Shih Tzu puppy — cooked chicken, rice, cottage cheese and plain yogurt. Since then, Artie has lost about 9 pounds.

“He’s more mobile, he’s more playful and his hair has started growing back in where he had bald spots,” said Jackson, one of a growing number of dog owners in Utah and across the nation forgoing commercial dog food for healthier, homemade puppy chow.

The interest in homemade dog food went into high gear in 2007 after a national recall of melamine-tainted pet food. Since then, there has been a proliferation of books and websites about how to cook for your pooch.

The trend will likely continue, because in recent weeks dozens of people around the country have been sickened by salmonella after handing tainted dog food.

But aside from those contamination scares, Americans are just more savvy about reading food labels and understanding the ingredients in packaged foods. They do it for the foods they eat, and they can’t help but do the same for their pets.

Once they decide to skip or cut down on commercial products, many, like Jackson, never go back.

“Artie and Ripley were so excited [to eat] that we decided to keep doing it,” said Jackson.

‘Huge difference’ » Rick Woodford’s dog suffered a more serious ailment. His Belgian Malinois /Labrador retriever mix was diagnosed with lymphoma and was given about a year to live.

His dog, named Jackson, showed no interest in eating commercial dog food, so Woodford started preparing his meals. Before long, Jackson was playing in the backyard. And he lived four more years.

“It made a huge difference,” Woodford said of the home-cooked meals. “I got three extra years with my buddy.”

It also led to a new career. Woodford opened a dog-food preparation and delivery business in Portland, Ore., specializing in home-cooked meals for pets, many with medical conditions.

He’s also the author of the new cookbook Feed Your Best Friend Better: Easy, Nutritious Meals and Treats for Dogs.

“I really didn’t want to spend my life being called the Dog Food Dude,” he said. “And I really didn’t want to become obsessive about dog food. But I’m not unique.”

The book contains recipes dog owners can prepare for their pets — and themselves — including meals and treats. There also is all sorts of advice about foods dogs should avoid; what to feed puppies or ailing dogs; how much to feed dogs of different sizes; and how to choose the best commercial food.

Salmon patties

This snack that provides protein, vitamin D, selenium, and a generous helping of omega-3 fatty acids. If you would like to make the same recipe for yourself, add the following to the salmon mixture: 1⁄3 cup mixed onion, plus salt and pepper as desired. Be sure to set aside your dog’s portion first to prevent your dog from getting the onion-laced bits.

1 (14.5-ounce) can salmon

2 large eggs

1¼ cups panko bread crumbs

1⁄3 cup minced fresh parsley

2 tablespoons olive oil

Empty the salmon and juices into a medium bowl. Flake with a fork to separate and remove any bones.

Add the eggs, bread crumbs and parsley and stir until well combined.

Form patties by packing the mixture into a ½-cup measuring cup and tapping gently into the palm of your hand. Press lightly into a 3½-inch patty.

Heat the oil over medium heat, and cook patties 4 or 5 minutes per side until nicely browned.

After the patties have cooled slightly, break up according to your dog’s weight and serve as treats.

Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 weeks.

The Internet is deepening its role as a major factor in what promises to be a tight, hard-fought presidential race, a new survey released Thursday discovered.

The Sachs/Mason-Dixon Poll finds one-quarter of voters say Internet news sites are the leading primary source of presidential campaign news. Newspapers and magazines come in at 23 percent, network news at 18 percent  and cable news at 15 percent.

Digital news sources were significantly more important to voters under 35, suggesting that the battleground for young voters will be online. Five out of six voters said social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook will play an important role in this race. By a 49 percent to 23 percent margin, the respondents believe that the Obama campaign is making better use of social media than the Romney campaign.

“In today’s ever-changing media landscape, it’s essential that political campaigns, the media and the voters themselves have a clear understanding of how citizens receive their news and information,” said Ron Sachs, president and CEO of Ron Sachs Communications.

“Modern political campaigns can no longer rely exclusively on traditional ways of reaching voters, and this is the first poll I’ve seen that takes the so-called ‘new’ media and matches it up to people’s voting preferences.”

The survey gave Republican Mitt Romney a three-percentage-point lead nationally over Democratic incumbent Barack Obama — 47 percent to 44 percent. Obama is ahead among women by 47 to 41 percent, and with voters younger than 50 by 49 to 42 percent.

Romney is supported by  men by a 53 to 40 percent margin and older voters by 51 to 39 percent. Romney also has a 47 to 41 edge with independents.

By a margin of 37 percent to 33 percent, likely voters would most want Obama to be their Facebook friend. However, more voters think Romney “looks more presidential.”

Among other poll results:

• The Internet is the leading method used by voters to receive breaking presidential campaign news, with 35 percent saying they use computers and 9 percent using smart phones;
• An overwhelming 84 percent of voters believe social media such as Facebook or Twitter will be important for the presidential candidates to raise money and win votes. By a 49 percent to 23 percent margin, voters believe Obama is the candidate who makes better use of social media platforms.
• Obama voters are more likely to rely on Internet news sites and network news as their top two sources of presidential campaign news and information, while Romney voters are more likely to look to newspapers/magazines and cable news.
•  A majority of voters under the age of 35 rely primarily on Internet news sites for presidential campaign news and information, while voters 35 and older rely on a wider variety of news sources.
• One in 20 younger voters say entertainment shows — for example, “The Daily Show,” “The Colbert Report,” late-night talk shows and “Saturday Night Live” — are their primary source of presidential campaign news and information.

The poll was conducted among 1,000 likely voters between Thursday last week and Monday.
