Catalina soars over Wearside

Preparations for the Sunderland Airshow were in full flight as the Catalina flying boat practiced its manoeuvres in the skies above Wearside.

The aircraft, which was a stalwart of World War Two, remained in service till 1980, and it still used today as a water bomber in aerial fire fighting.

97-year-old war veteran Lance Robson flew in a Catalina while serving in the RAF RV Coastal Command.

He took to the skies with The Blades aerobatic display team on the practice run.
