Maria Menounos and Total Divas Natalya Fight Nasty Against The Bella Twins and Eva Marie at SummerSlam

Total Divas MatchWWE

You don’t mess with a wrestling veteran or an entertainment news host…

That’s what Brie Bella, Nikki Bella and Eva Marie learned at SummerSlam this past weekend. In their largely anticipated Axxess match against WWE Diva Natalya (also known as Nattie on Total Divas) and EXTRA host Maria Menounos, no one held back.

How did a journalist end up getting in the ring with a bunch of WWE Divas? Maria’s been a fan of wrestling for a long time and after giving her support to Nattie over social media, a Twitter fight with The Bella Twins ensued and a challenge was accepted.

Total Divas MatchWWE

Things got ugly really fast: Maria quickly learned that harsh words over Twitter don’t mean anything in the ring and she took some super hard hits and body slams.

In Eva Marie’s debut performance, she got to go head-to-head with Maria and the Diva veteran. She strolled out in a sexy white costume that looked quite tight. But it’s fitting didn’t get in the way of her throwing down in the ring and she got some good hits in.

After lots of hair pulls, flips, pins and body slams, Nattie and Maria ended up the victors and won the match! This continues Maria’s winning streak and proves that Maria can hold her own against WWE Divas. Brie’s not too happy about that…

Tune-in to E! this Sunday at 10/9c for an all-new Total Divas!

Kerry calls attack against Syrian civilians ‘crime against humanity’

Secretary of State John Kerry condemned Syria for mass killing. NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell reports.

Making a forceful case to answer a “crime against conscience,” Secretary of State John Kerry declared Friday that the U.S. had a moral obligation to punish Syria for using chemical weapons — painting a ghastly portrait of twitching bodies, victims foaming at the mouth and row upon row of children gassed to death.

He called Syrian President Bashar al-Assad “a thug and a murderer” and pledged, to a country weary after more than a decade of war in the Middle East, that the U.S. response wouldn’t require ground troops and wouldn’t be open-ended.

The U.N. team of chemical weapons inspectors collecting samples from the site of the alleged attack wrapped up its work and pulled out of the country ahead of schedule early Saturday as it became clearer that President Barack Obama might be prepared to strike Syria unilaterally, in the face of objections from allies and many in Congress.

Obama said he hadn’t made a decision on military action, but he echoed Kerry in saying any U.S. action would be limited. The U.S. has an obligation “as a leader in the world” to hold foreign nations to account when they use prohibited weapons, Obama said.

“This kind of offense is a challenge to the world,” Obama said after a meeting with Baltic leaders. While the U.S. would prefer to act with the broad support of the international community, which has so far not been forthcoming, Obama said, “we don’t want the world to be paralyzed.”

An administration official confirmed that Obama spoke Friday with British Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Francois Hollande.

With Americans skeptical, members of Congress raising questions and other nations objecting to a U.S. attack outright, Kerry said the world had to answer what he called a crime against humanity itself, carried out last week in the suburbs of Damascus, the Syrian capital. He said the attack killed 1,429 people, including 426 children.

Secretary of State John Kerry explains why military action against Syria would be justified. Watch his full address.

“Instead of being tucked safely in their beds at home,” he said, “we saw rows of children lying side by side, sprawled on a hospital floor, all of them dead from Assad’s gas and surrounded by parents and grandparents who had suffered the same fate.”

He declared: “My friends, it matters here if nothing is done. It matters if the world speaks out in condemnation and then nothing happens.”

Referring directly to the long wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, he said: “Fatigue does not absolve us of our responsibility. Just longing for peace does not necessarily bring it about.”

As he spoke, the White House released an intelligence report (.pdf) claiming “high confidence” that the Syrian regime had used chemical weapons. The report cited a “large body of independent sources” but acknowledged that not all the evidence could be declassified.

Syrian TV quoted an official source at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants as denying every point in Kerry’s speech, dismissing them as “some old stories the terrorists fabricated more than a week ago — totally full of lies and fabrications.”

“The figures put forward by Mr. Kerry are absolutely fake numbers, and the source is the insurgents in Syria and external opposition that incite U.S. aggression,” said the report, which was translated by NBC News. It said Kerry’s speech should “remind the world of the lies fabricated and delivered by [then-Secretary of State] Colin Powell before the invasion of Iraq.”

Just before Kerry spoke, the U.N. said its inspectors had finished collecting samples from the site of the attack. But it said a complete analysis would take time and offered no sense of when it would be complete. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the five permanent Security Council members that it may be two weeks before final results are ready, diplomats told Reuters.

Obama on his own

A final war plan is in place, but President Barack Obama hasn’t yet decided what action to take in Syria. NBC News’ Jim Miklaszewski reports.

Britain, the most steadfast U.S. ally, rejected military action in a stunning vote Thursday night. Acting through the U.N. is a dead end because China and Russia, which have veto power in the Security Council, will not allow it.

And at home, members of Congress have insisted that Obama get lawmakers’ approval. Americans appear to agree: In a poll released Friday by NBC News, almost 8 in 10 said they wanted the president to sell Congress on military action before an attack.

The poll found that support among Americans is higher for a limited military strike, such as the firing of cruise missiles from Navy warships in the Mediterranean Sea. But half of Americans are opposed to any military attack.

White House officials told NBC News that the administration was prepared for the U.S. to go it alone. Still, even after a briefing from the administration officials, some members of Congress were unconvinced.

Rep. Buck McKeon, R-Calif., chairman of the Armed Services Committee, said he was disappointed that Obama himself didn’t take part.

“One of the things that has really bothered me is the president drawing a red line without knowing in his mind what he would do if they crossed the red line,” he said, referring to a remark Obama made a year ago about Syria’s potential use of chemical weapons.

Other lawmakers, including Sens. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., and Robert Menendez, D-N.J., emerged from the briefing persuaded, NBC News reported.

Late Friday, the White House scheduled another briefing for Republican senators  Saturday at the request of Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

“Sen. McConnell believes it’s important for the whole Conference to have the opportunity to communicate directly with the administration on this important issue,” McConnell’s office said.

A Syrian official told NBC News officials the government was expecting a U.S. attack.

“We know it’s going to come. We just don’t know when,” the official said.

Richard Engel, Andrea Mitchell, Kelly O’Donnell, David Rudge, Shawna Thomas, Frank Thorp, Kristen Welker, Matthew DeLuca and M. Alex Johnson of NBC News contributed to this report.

Israeli intelligence ‘intercepted Syrian regime talk about chemical attack’

A team of United Nations inspectors have resumed their second day of investigations at the site of an alleged chemical weapons attack outside Damascus, as western leaders moved towards military action in response to the Syrian regime’s reported use of chemical weapons against civilians.

The UN team left their Damascus hotel early on Wednesday after the operation was suspended on Tuesday following a sniper attack on its convoy on Monday.

The bulk of evidence proving the Assad regime’s deployment of chemical weapons – which would provide legal grounds essential to justify any western military action – has been provided by Israeli military intelligence, the German magazine Focus has reported.

The 8200 unit of the Israeli Defence Forces, which specialises in electronic surveillance, intercepted a conversation between Syrian officials regarding the use of chemical weapons, an unnamed former Mossad official told Focus. The content of the conversation was relayed to the US, the ex-official said.

The 8200 unit collects and analyses electronic data, including wiretapped telephone calls and emails. It is the largest unit in the IDF.

Israel has invested in intelligence assets in Syria for decades, according to a senior government official. “We have an historic intelligence effort in the field, for obvious reasons,” he said.

Israel and the US had a “close and co-operative relationship in the intelligence field”, he added, but declined to comment specifically on the Focus report.

Senior Israeli security officials arrived in Washington on Monday to share the latest results of intelligence-gathering, and to review the Syrian crisis with national security adviser Susan Rice.

In northern Israel, a military training exercise began on Wednesday in the Golan Heights, Syrian territory that has been occupied by Israel since 1967. There have been numerous incidences of mortar shells and gunfire landing on the Israeli-controlled Golan over the past year, prompting return fire by the IDF on occasion.

The Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, was due to convene the security cabinet on Wednesday to discuss impending US military intervention in Syria. Officials are assessing the chances of Syrian retaliation against Israel following US action.

An unnamed senior Syrian army officer told the Iranian news agency Fars: “If Syria is attacked, Israel will also be set on fire and such an attack will, in turn, engage Syria’s neighbours.”

Israel was “prepared for every scenario” and would respond forcefully if necessary, Netanyahu said after the meeting.

Later, Benny Gantz, the Israeli chief of staff, said: “Those who wish to harm us will find us sharper and firmer than ever. Our enemies should know that we are determined and ready to defend our citizens by any action necessary, against any threat and in any scenario we will face.”

The likelihood of Syrian retaliation depended on the scale of the US attack, said military analyst Alex Fishman.

“If it is decided to fire several dozen Tomahawk missiles at military targets, there is a chance that the Syrians will succeed in containing the attack, presenting the offensive as a failure and praising the staying power of the army and the Syrian people; however, if it is decided to fire hundreds of missiles and significantly harm its strategic assets, the Syrian need for an act of revenge will heighten,” Fishman wrote in Yedioth Ahronoth.

“The formula is simple: The more threatened the Syrian regime feels, the greater the chance that it will fire at its neighbours,” he added.

Meanwhile, demand for gas masks and protection kits from the Israeli public continued to rise. The Israeli postal authority said telephone inquiries had increased by 300% and queues had formed outside distribution depots.

According to a report in Ma’ariv, Israel’s home front command is grappling with the problem of providing gas masks to men with beards, extremely common among ultra-Orthodox Jews. A special mask, which can accommodate a beard, is available but the high cost means it is only distributed to men over 65 or whose beards are for health reasons.

“Men who grow beards for religious reasons will have to shave in the event of a chemical attack,” Ma’ariv reported.

Robin spent a good portion of his post-VMAs night by his wife actress Paula Patton’s side — and made sure to compliment her.

“They arrived hand-in-hand to the after party at 1Oak. Robin got on the mic when they played ‘Blurred Lines’ and dedicated it to the ‘most beautiful woman in the f—— world,'” a source tells Life Style. “They didn’t leave each other’s sides all night.”

So how did the brunette beauty, 37, feel about her man, 36, dirty dancing with 20-year-old Miley? “You could tell they were making a united front. She rolled her eyes when people asked about the performance,” the insider says. “Some of it was planned and some of it was ad-libbed. Paula knew it would be provocative, but she didn’t know how provocative because there was a little bit of improv. She was slightly annoyed, but not jealous.”

Over the past week, the crooner has been making sure his lady knows how strongly he feels about her.

During the Time Warner Cable MTV VMA concert benefiting LifeBEAT on Friday, he dedicated “Lost Without U” to Paula. “He said, ‘I wrote this song when we were going through some tough times,'” a guest told Life Style. “When he said that, Paula was tearing up, but in a good way. Guess they’re in a better place now.”
